YES THEY DO..And yes that is a fact. Otherwise, why would they tell you to do it? I sure as well don’t want my plane crashing due to some idiot playing their gameboy

The airlines don’t want to take a chance that some new electronic gizmo will interfere with the plane’s operation or communications. They don’t know for sure if it is true but are erring on the side of caution.

It’s not that they interfere with the plane, it’s that most of these can injure you in the event of a landing or takeoff emergency.

In isolated tests, devices that transmit a signal have interferred with GPS signals. It has never been observed, to my knowledge, in real life. As a pilot, I support being cautious until we know more. GPS has become the dominant form of navigation, and an advanced type is what brings planes in for landing in bad weather. The restrictions are probably way over the top, but let’s not put it to the test.

As for devices that do not transmit a signal, I think it’s just a matter of not expecting the flight attendants to run around trying to verify which devices are OK or not. They’ve got other jobs during take off and landing.

It’s one of those things where under testing conditions, minor interference has been caused to navigation systems by certain electrical devices, its rare, but i COULD happen, so why risk it. It’s the same as using a mobile phone when you are in gas/petrol station.

i beilive so… the new handheld gaming systems such as the PSP and the Nintendo DS have WiFi connections which is a wireless connection to find other psp’s and Ds’s, and the waves might set some things to whack out… but laptops i dont think would do anything really… seeing as they do not really send off anything unless you have an internt connection at the time… unless things give off like electronic fields or something… but i dont think that airlines would rely on just a myth theres probably some scientific truth to the matter…
